Bob Williams Appears on WALK's "Island Assignment" to Discuss Recent Carbon Monoxide Legislation
Briscoe President Bob Williams appeared on WALK Radio's "Island Assignment" on June 22 to discuss the recent legislation in effect requiring CO detectors in commercial buildings, including the Steve Nelson Safety Act. He also explained how CO can poison people without them knowing it and what everyone can do to protect themselves from this "silent killer."

Bob Williams Attends Signing of Steve Nelson Safety Act into LawBriscoe Protective
Bob Williams, president of Briscoe Protective Systems Inc., joined Suffolk County Legislators William Spencer and John Kennedy at a press conference at the Rose Y. Caracappa Auditorium in Hauppauge on May 21 for the signing of a bill requiring all county-owned and leased buildings in Suffolk County to have a functioning carbon monoxide (CO) detector into law. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone signed the Steve Nelson Safety Act into law in the company of local elected officials, Suffolk County Fire Chief Ed Springer and friends and members of the family of Steven Nelson, the manager of Legal Sea Foods in Huntington Station who died from CO poisoning on February 23. Mr. Williams also showed examples of CO detectors that are currently being used in existing buildings and can be installed into pre-existing CO detection systems.

On April 29, the Suffolk County Legislature overwhelmingly approved “The Steve Nelson Safety Act” (IR-1247) — sponsored by Legislator Kennedy and co-sponsored by Legislator Spencer — which requires all CO detectors to be installed in all county facilities. These installations will take place in three phases and, under the new law, the Suffolk County Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services, will determine how many detectors will be installed in each building and in which locations inside the premises.

The Steve Nelson Safety Act also requires that CO detectors be installed into existing hardwired fire alarm systems. For those buildings that are not hardwired, a battery-powered or electrical CO detector may be used.

Initial installations will be performed on county buildings 100,000 square feet or greater. During the second phase, buildings more than 20,000 square feet but less than 100,000 square feet will have CO detectors installed. The third phase will consist of CO detector installations inside buildings less than 20,000 square feet. The Act calls for completion of all installations by the end of 2018.

“I wish to thank the Suffolk County Legislature for their proactive stance and signing this bill into law,” Mr. Williams said. “This law is ahead of the curve on both the state and federal levels. This will result in fewer deaths which are totally preventable.”
